My Forgotten Love

It took a late March snow storm to bring us together again.

The freedom to roam is exhilarating.

A surprise with every footstep, like the turkey scrape on the snow.

Here's a better look.

Beauty everywhere.

Simple and pure, as the driven snow.

Until tomorrow, God willing.

Don't Confuse Hospitality with Endurance

I've always liked that phrase.

And, at our place, on our 40 acres, it fits.

Our daily company is growing...
and the word is out that we are kind to creatures who show up at our door.
Like the wild turkeys.
Meleagris gallopavo.
You can set your watch by them.
Knowing we begin feeding exactly at 4:00 p.m.,
(which is actually 3:00 p.m. as we don't change our clocks...)
they arrive, one by one.

At first, they stuck out like a sore thumb.
And our roosters were leary...wondering if they would woo our hens.

But after the first day, they fit in and came and left with little fanfare.

That was months ago.

Now, the beautiful birds are here to stay.  Considering us home.

And why not...they are God's creature.  Beautiful.  And wonderfully made.

Right down to the tail feathers.

So for now, the fowl are not calling foul.
Although I still haven't figured out
how they all know to gobble at precisely the same second.

Even with the gobble, all is well with our roosters.

And their bigger, loftier cousin.

Until tomorrow, as always, God willing.

Good Deed for the Day

Over the weekend, I had noticed one of the wild turkeys didn't quite trot the same due to a perfectly tied "bow" on his right leg.  There was a sash made from the top of a feeding bag that had somehow looped and fastened to its leg.

I had wondered if he could "shake it off".

However, I had failed to mention it to Russ.

It seems I didn't have to, because he noticed on his own.

Yesterday, Russ made a snare and patiently waited for the big fella to step in.

Once he did, there was some squawkin', but Russ got the sash untied and rescued the bird's leg from a painful bondage.

Russ said "He thought he was a gonner..but settled down eventually and was grateful for his freedom once I could get the tight tie cut off..."

Small task, with a big outcome ~ a wild turkey who knows the hands of kindness.

Signs of Autumn

September...

There's a peacefulness about Autumn, unlike any other changing of the season.

Color ushers in stark, cold, white.

The animals see it coming way before us humans.

Fall...my favorite time of year.

When my world is focused and everything seems right.
